Blog written by Shafaat Mamun, Youth Community Animator – TERT, BCS.
Middle school was a time of growth and discovery, but it was also a period marked by a troubling encounter with racism that profoundly impacted my perspective.
Racism is a harsh reality that affects individuals at all stages, including students like myself. However, by sharing my story, I hope to help on this issue and inspire others to stand up against discrimination.
Despite the challenges, confronting racism taught me resilience and the importance of speaking out against injustice.
In seventh grade, I faced hurtful racial slurs because of my ethnicity. Despite feeling hurt I found comfort with friends who gave me courage. I spoke in class discussions about diversity, hoping to educate and foster empathy. Over time, I embraced my cultural identity, learning resilience and determination. This experience fueled my passion for advocating against racism and promoting inclusivity. Through empathy and dialogue, we can dismantle stereotypes and build acceptance for all.
I believe education and awareness are crucial in combating racism. By sharing personal experiences, we can foster empathy and understanding among peers and educators.
I’m advocating my story to encourage change. No one should feel discriminated against because of their race. Together, we can create inclusive environments where diversity is celebrated and respected.
