“Acts of racism are things that don’t happen these days.” This is a statement that surprisingly some people still agree with. Racism might not be as pronounced in society as it was in past years, but that doesn’t deny the fact that it is something that still happens. I am a 15 year old girl in grade ten in a predominantly white school. Yes there are a few other people of color that go here but either way it should not have any impact on how I am treated, but sadly it does. It can be as small as a joke nudging at the scarf on my head that makes everyone share a laugh. But understand that joke was directed to me. Honestly, when kids made jokes like that at first, it felt like something out of a Disney show or something else you’d see on TV. I never expected someone to actually have the audacity to say a comment like that out loud, let alone straight to my face. Somebody else would’ve stood up and said something – right? Wrong. Or at least not in this environment.
